Get Glowing

Bronzer is a beauty product of contradictions. While most of us would name it in our “Can’t Live Without” list, especially during summer, this buy can potentially do more harm than good if applied incorrectly. Think a muddy-looking pallor, orange doughnuts for cheeks, or accentuated fine lines and wrinkles. Done right, however, bronzer can lift your look and add healthy colour to your complexion.

Follow these simple steps to avoid a faux glow faux pas:

Choose the correct formula

This is key for achieving a believable result. If you normally use a creamy foundation or tinted moisturiser, you’ll need a liquid or cream-based bronzer to complement your look.

If, however, you always top your base with a dusting of translucent powder, similarly your chosen bronzer should take the form of a powder form.  This golden rule – cream on cream, powder on powder – will banish telltale lines and ensure blending is a breeze.

Be smart about texture

Remember that different finishes create different results. So, if you want to create a chiseled bone structure or add a sunkissed wash of colour to your complexion, a matt formula will work best.

If, however, you want to add a lit-from-within glow, you’ll need a bronzer with a shimmery finish for a radiance boost. A word of warning on high-shine textures, though: while super-flattering for skin, they do act like a highlighter pen. So just be sure to keep them away from any lines, crows feet or blemishes. Cheekbones and temples make the ideal position.

Blend, blend, blend

Taking the time to apply your bronzer correctly will ensure professional-looking results every time. But take note: never rely on the little applicators that can be found in some products. If you’re using a powder bronzer, invest in a large, fluffy brush to create a seamless finish. Swirl it over the compact, then tap gently on the back of your hand to dislodge any clumps of colour before using a light, circular motion to apply to your skin. Start at the apples of your cheeks and work upwards towards your temples, blending into your hairline for a traceless finish.

Using a liquid or cream? Apply a little to the back of your hand, then use a clean foundation brush to work the bronzer into your skin to create an airbrushed look. Alternatively, blend a touch of the product between your fingers and dab onto your cheeks, allowing the warmth of your fingers to help the colour melt into your complexion.

A note about blush…

While it may sound counterintuitive to use two cheek colour products at once, a bronzer’s best friend is, in fact, blush. After you’ve applied your chosen glow-getter, grab a blush in a rosy tone (just remember the golden rule above – cream on cream, powder on powder – it’s essential here, too). By adding just a dash of pink to the apples of your cheeks as a finishing touch, the results look so much more natural. Muddy pallor? Not any more!

Long Lasting Makeup for the Summer Season

ELES summer makeup

The scorching heat and humidity of the summer months could make dressing up for work or for a party a bit hard since that would include not only the attire that you’re wearing but also your makeup as well. During the summer season, our skin tends to produce more oil so the kind of makeup you use matters. Foundation tends to melt or liquefy, and little beads of sweat ruin your look. Prevent your makeup from melting down by following these tips:

  1. Skip the foundation and use a light oil free moisturiser like the ELES Mineral Sheer Tint with SPF 20 (this great product is a tinted moisturizer and sunscreen in one!). Should you really need maximum coverage for dinner dance parties or weddings, opt for a foundation that is self-setting and oil-free like the ELES Mineral Liquid Foundation with SPF 15. It holds onto your skin for a longer time while keeping your skin looking all natural and glowing.

  2. Go easy on the blush! During the day, sport a healthy look by using the ELES Mineral Bronzing Duo which is a bronzer and finishing powder in one. Trust us, you’ll look fabulous with this one! For evening look, go for a barely there makeup by applying a very thin layer of ELES Mineral Blush (the shade is buildable from bare to rich so you don’t need to do the a lot of blending).

  3. Look for long-wearing mascara  and eyeliner. Most would prefer pencil but thanks to ELES’ creator Liane Scior, she knows that a lot of us women need. We now have a long wearing LiquiLiner which helps you achieve that perfectly sculpted eyes without having to worry about the summer sweat! Browse through our collection here.

  4. The environment’s heat could chap your lips. Keep them protected and moisturised with the ELES Super Balm for super radiant, super healthy pout!

  5. And our most important tip is this: Look for all-natural cosmetics with SPF to protect your face from the sun’s harmful UVA & UVB that may cause skin pigmentation. Opting for all natural makeup products also keeps your skin acne-free.

We’d like to hear from you about your favourite ELES products so we’ll know what to give away on our next competition. Comment below! It would be more fun if you show us your favourite products through photos or videos!

Makeup Inspired by the Medals

With a few more medals for the Aussies secured and the London Olympics Closing Ceremony just around the corner, we thought we’d pay a little tribute to the games with this medal-inspired makeup wrap up.

GOLD
Gold is an incredibly versatile shade that can be played up or down for day to night looks. Golden shimmers bring a subtle warmth to the skin and help with contouring and highlighting.
If you have brown or green eyes with golden flecks, try a gold eyeshadow to play that aspect up a little.

SILVER
A little white-silver in the inside corners of your eyes instantly opens up the eyes and gives you a bright, wide-awake look.
Grey-silver nail polish gives you an edgy look without being as over-bearing as black and seems to suit every skin tone imaginable.
Finish off your look with a subtle veil of shimmer to create next-level porcelain perfection.

BRONZE
Far from third place in the makeup stakes, bronze is a beauty staple that we can’t quite imagine life without!
Whether it’s summer or winter, we turn to bronzer to get a faux-glow worthy of a week in the Caribbean and love a slick of bronze-toned gloss.
Bronze eyeshadow is incredibly versatile and works wonders in bringing out blue eyes.

How to Fake a Healthy Glow

There’s a flu worthy of a Contagion-style film going around Sydney at the moment and we’re doing all we can not to catch it! But it has got us thinking, once you’re over that must-stay-in-bed phase of the winter flu and you’re heading back to work still feeling a little under the weather, you sort of have to fake it ’til you make it, right?
If you’re unlucky enough to have caught the super flu, or even when a mild cold comes knocking, this guide to faking the glowing health of goddesses like Miranda Kerr will have you ready for your close up and you won’t have to spend hours of precious sleep time to achieve it either!

Blush Rush
We all know rosy cheeks give the impression of health so don’t be afraid of your blusher! Go easy though, given that we’re often a little paler when we’re feeling under-the-weather, your usual dose of peachy pink could be a little over bearing if you’re unwell. Remember, makeup it’s always easier to add on than take off so apply a little blush to the apples of your cheeks, then add more if it’s not enough!
ELES RECOMMENDS: Our Mineral Matte Blush comes in two gorgeous shades and has jet-milled pigments to deliver a velvety finish.

Bronzed Beauty
Bronzer can take you from sick-bed to glamazon with the swoop of a brush. Well, at least looking that way! The humble bronzer does wonders for your healthy glow and takes no time at all. Try our Mineral Finish Bronzer Duos there are four shade combinations, each with one matte bronzer and one shimmering powder meaning you can create the look you want with one product. Each one is designed to minimize fine lines while maximizing a healthy glow.

Bright Eyes
Our eyes are not just the window to our soul, but to our health. Often when our body is battling illness, our eyes go slightly yellow or red. Counteract this with a little white shadow in the inner corner of your eye. Not only will this make your eyes look brighter but also larger so you can eliminate any signs of fatigue.
A good coating of Lush Mascara will help open up your eyes too!
ELES Recommends: Our Mineral Eyeshadow in Opal will do the trick! If you’re after a more subtle, matte look, our Mineral Matte Shadow in Antique White is a great option too.

Pink Lips
As much as we love bold, bright lipsticks, they can feel like a little too much work when we’re not feeling our best. But, like the rest of our face, our lips tend to lose colour when we’re unwell.
Luckily, there is a solution. Our Super Balm is easy to apply, packs a hydrating punch and leaves a subtle slick of colour. Try our Super Balm in Sweetie for healthy-looking pink lips!

EXPERT TIP: When you’re sick, your body is working harder than it normally does to try and get you better. This means sensitivities and allergies can flare up more than they otherwise would. Using mineral makeup ensures you’re able to fake a healthy glow without irritating the skin even more. Win win!
